It's Patty Griffin, so of course it has the substance. The name says it's home recordings in some cases and that is what we get, but we cant deduct for the production because the name tells us we're getting home recordings. In the case of the first three (of 10) songs, the songs are far less produced that Ghosts. Ghosts was a well-produced with a raw accent. The first three songs, particularly the first two, are just raw, like a raw mic pointed at an acoustic guitar, without a direct connect to the sound board; like a bootleg. Too bad on this, for me, great PG songs; I would have rather had the produced version, less artsy but better for the mix in my view. There are some really great songs, as we expect, but I would have preferred to have it all in a standard "even" production. Maybe Patty will do a live set like Artists Den (or Kiss in Time) and step up the production in a consistent manner. A worthy addition to a broad portfolio, but a bit indulgent on the production, because it satisfies an artsy view, but I'm not sure the audience really wants to buy a raw bootleg-sounding great song. But, again, it's only a few songs. I might have put those songs last instead of first, because the first impression of the release is ah-oh, is it going to be this raw on the entire set? This leaves you wondering and not at ease. Great songs, uneven production, as labeled. This release is best for those of us who are PG fans; I would not start PG with this one. My common statement is buy Children, 1000 Kisses, and Ghosts as the essential PG, but all three, first, then go from there. Or, go with Artist's Den (audio and/or dvd) to get a well-produced live mix.
